Wisconsin is adding 42 new EV fast-charging stations – here’s where

September 8, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 44

Wisconsin is putting $25 million in federal money toward 42 new fast-charging stations for electric vehicles, spread across communities from Sturgeon Bay to Prairie du Chien. The stations will go in at places like Kwik Trip gas stations, hotels, and grocery stores, so drivers can run errands or grab food while charging. Each site will have at least four fast chargers (called DC fast chargers, capable of charging a car much quicker than a home outlet) delivering 150 kW, adding up to at least 168 new charging ports statewide.

The money comes from a federal program called NEVI, created by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which first required states to cover their interstates with chargers spaced no more than 50 miles apart. Wisconsin has now met that goal, freeing it to fund chargers on busier state and US highways instead, including US 10, 12, 18, 45, 61, and 63. This brings the state's total NEVI funding to $62.1 million across 120 charging locations, 26 of which are already up and running.

For homeowners with an EV or thinking about buying one, this means more places to charge on everyday routes, not just interstates, which can make a home EV more practical for longer trips. The funding itself isn't tied to any home upgrade or rebate, but it reflects a broader federal investment in charging infrastructure that could affect how convenient EV ownership becomes in your area. The infrastructure law funding this program is set to expire at the end of September, with its renewal still undecided in Congress.
