Vistra supports Texas data center pause, execs say

August 10, 2026 · Utility Dive · Score: 20

Texas is pausing new data center hookups to the state's power grid while officials audit the huge backlog of proposed projects waiting for connection, which totals around 474 gigawatts. Power company Vistra says it backs the pause, with CEO Jim Burke saying he wants to see that queue "culled" of speculative projects that may never get built.

This is grid-level, big-picture news rather than something that changes what's available to homeowners right now. It matters mainly because data centers are becoming a major new source of electricity demand in Texas and other states, and how utilities and regulators handle that growth affects the broader supply and pricing of power. Vistra doesn't expect the pause to affect its 1.2-gigawatt deal to supply an Amazon data center from its Comanche Peak nuclear plant, which is still on track to start delivering power in 2027.

Vistra also said it now expects somewhat slower overall electricity demand growth in Texas, 4 to 6 percent a year instead of an earlier forecast of 5 to 6 percent, though it still expects data centers, population growth, and increased use of electric equipment in homes and industry to keep pushing demand up. None of this changes any rebate, incentive, or upgrade program available to homeowners. It's a sign of how much new demand — from data centers and from things like home electrification — utilities are planning for, which can influence electricity rates and grid investment over time.
