Texas hits new peak demand record, but supply constraints will limit growth
Texas set a new record for electricity demand on July 22, and a new analysis says the state's grid, run by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), could see peak demand climb to 120 gigawatts by 2030 — more than 30% above that record. But the same report, from Ascend Analytics, says the grid can't build new power plants fast enough to keep up. More than 80% of the huge new electricity users waiting to connect, mostly data centers and industrial facilities, likely won't have matching power supply in place by then. The culprits are shortages of gas turbines, long construction timelines, and backlogs in connecting new plants to the grid. Analysts expect wholesale power prices to rise in the near term as demand grows, before leveling off later as more renewable generation comes online. Natural gas plants are still expected to set prices during evening hours when solar power fades. The report also flags September as a riskier month for the grid, since earlier sunsets cut into solar output and evening wind tends to run lower than in August. The broader issue is money: Texas's electricity market currently pays generators mainly through price spikes during shortages, rather than guaranteed contracts, and lenders are growing wary of financing new power plants and batteries without more certain revenue. That financing squeeze is one reason growth in new supply may lag behind the surge in demand.
Solar’s infrastructure obstacle
Solar power itself has gotten cheap and fast to build. What's slowing projects down now is the grid: getting new solar and battery projects connected to transmission lines, substations, and utility equipment. In Texas, demand from data centers, AI, and manufacturing has been so strong that grid operator ERCOT has fielded requests for hundreds of gigawatts of new electricity load. Developers now often check whether a site can actually connect to the grid before they buy land, reversing the old approach. Connecting a project to the grid (called interconnection) has become its own complicated process, involving utility reviews, financial deposits that can run into the millions of dollars, and long waits for specialized equipment like high-voltage transformers and breakers. In one case, a single approved 345-kilovolt breaker (a piece of switching equipment) became the item holding up a whole project's connection date. A solar farm can be built in under two years, but the transmission and utility work needed to hook it up can take much longer. None of this is specific to solar — it reflects a broader strain on the electric grid as data centers and industrial electrification drive up demand for power nationwide. For homeowners, the takeaway is indirect: rules and rebates for home upgrades usually don't hinge on these transmission bottlenecks, but the pace of grid buildout in your area can affect how reliable and how expensive electricity is over time. SEG Solar opens 4 GW Texas facility, announces plan to become the nation’s largest crystalline silicon module maker
Solar company SEG Solar has opened a large new factory in Tomball, Texas, where workers assemble solar panels (crystalline silicon modules) for homes and businesses. The plant is expected to reach full output next year, adding 4 gigawatts of yearly capacity on top of the company's existing 2-gigawatt plant nearby in Houston. Combined, that's enough panels to eventually produce 30,000 modules a day at this site alone, once it employs about 500 workers. SEG also announced plans to build a second factory across the street within 18 months, adding another 4.6 gigawatts of capacity. If completed, the company says it would become the largest U.S. maker of this type of solar panel, producing around 70,000 modules a day across its Texas sites. The company also said it wants to build a plant that makes solar cells (the components inside panels that convert sunlight to electricity) in the U.S. by 2028. The timing is notable because the expansion was announced one day after the Trump administration unveiled new tariffs and a minimum price rule on imported solar cells and panels. Company leaders acknowledged they still need to figure out how to respond to those trade changes. For homeowners, none of this changes anything immediately, but more U.S.-made solar panels entering the market, combined with new tariffs on imports, could eventually affect panel pricing and availability for home solar installations.
