Three W Solar project comes online in Texas

September 30, 2026 · Solar Power World · Score: 15

A new solar power plant is up and running in Hillsboro, Texas. The Three W Solar project generates 150 megawatts of electricity and was built by Black & Veatch for Mitsui & Co. It has finished construction and gotten approval from ERCOT, the organization that manages Texas's power grid.

This project doesn't connect directly to individual homes, but it adds to the overall supply of electricity in Texas. One notable detail: part of the funding came from an unusual source. The video game platform SuperPower invested in the project, with thousands of individual gamers backing it through their subscriptions using something called a virtual power purchase agreement. That's an arrangement where a buyer commits to purchasing power from a renewable project, helping fund its construction, without physically receiving that specific electricity.

For homeowners, this is mainly a sign of how solar power is expanding across Texas and how new financing models, like pooling small consumer contributions, are helping get projects built. It doesn't come with any rebate, program, or direct action tied to your own home.
