Two Chinese solar equipment makers are fighting a patent lawsuit in a Texas federal court, and Tesla's planned solar factory got pulled into the middle of it. Linton Crystal Technologies, whose parent company is based in China, sued rival Zhejiang Jingsheng, claiming Jingsheng's equipment infringes patents on a part of the furnace used to grow silicon crystals for solar panels. Jingsheng reportedly won a large Tesla order earlier this year for this equipment, while Linton did not. Linton is asking for damages and a court order that could block use of the disputed equipment.
Tesla isn't part of the lawsuit and hasn't confirmed the order, but trade reports say Tesla bought crystal-growing equipment from Jingsheng this year as part of building a large new solar factory in Texas, meant to produce finished panels starting around 2029. This equipment is used at the very first step of making solar panels, so any disruption to the supply of it could affect how quickly that factory gets up and running.
For homeowners, this doesn't change anything about installing solar today. It's a dispute between equipment suppliers and doesn't affect current solar panel availability, pricing, or existing rebate programs. It's simply a sign that Tesla's push to manufacture more solar equipment domestically still depends heavily on Chinese suppliers and their disputes, which could affect how fast new Tesla-made panels come to market down the road.
