Tesla and SpaceX say they'll build "Terafab," a huge chip-making plant, in Grimes County, Texas, about an hour northwest of Houston. The first phase is priced at $16.8 billion, with the finished site expected to top 100 million square feet, which the companies call the largest chip factory in the world. They say it will make chips for Tesla's Optimus robots, its self-driving Cybercabs, and data centers SpaceX wants to put in space. The companies plan to draw water from a nearby reservoir instead of local groundwater, addressing concerns some residents have raised about water use tied to data centers in the area.
None of this changes the chips going into cars you can buy now. Tesla already has deals with Samsung and TSMC for its current and next-generation chips, so Terafab is a bet on the future, not something tied to today's vehicles.
The project's numbers have shifted since it was first announced in March, when the price tag was $25 billion. SpaceX's own paperwork for its stock offering described Terafab as a general plan without firm commitments from either company. So while there's now a real location and permitting underway, exactly how much gets built, and how much of the cost Tesla itself will carry, is still unsettled.
For homeowners, this is a corporate and manufacturing story with no direct link to home energy upgrades, rebates, or your utility bill. It's worth knowing about mainly because it shows how much money and resources, including water, are being funneled into large computing and manufacturing projects around the country.
