Span signs Sunrun as installation partner for XFRA distributed data center solution

September 23, 2026 · Solar Power World · Score: 28

Two energy companies, Span and Sunrun, are teaming up on a new idea: putting small AI computing equipment inside homes, powered by home solar and battery systems. Span makes a system called XFRA, which places computer processing hardware in houses to help run AI workloads for large tech companies. Sunrun will now handle the solar and battery installations that power these home-based computing nodes.

The plan starts with new-construction homes in Texas and other markets Span and Sunrun haven't named yet, built in partnership with homebuilders. If your home is one of the ones chosen, you'd get a smart electrical panel, a multi-battery storage system, and solar panels installed at no cost to you or the builder, and it wouldn't raise your home's purchase price. This comes through what the companies call a pre-paid lease. In exchange for hosting the AI computing equipment, homeowners get whole-home backup power during outages and ongoing payments for letting the equipment use their property and electricity.

The battery systems installed in these homes would also be enrolled in Sunrun's grid programs, meaning the utility or grid operator could draw on stored power from these home batteries when needed, similar to how a small power plant works. For now, this program only applies to new homes built through this specific partnership, not existing houses. If you're in the market for new construction in Texas or one of the other markets involved, this could be worth asking a builder about, but no broader rollout to existing homes has been announced.
