SEG completes construction on 4-GW solar panel factory outside Houston

SEG Solar has finished building a new solar panel factory in Tomball, Texas, just outside Houston. The $200 million facility spans more than 500,000 square feet and can produce 4 gigawatts of panels a year, making it one of the largest factories in the country for a panel type called HJT (heterojunction technology), which layers different silicon materials to boost efficiency. Commercial production is expected to start in the third quarter of this year. This is SEG's second U.S. panel plant, adding to a 2-gigawatt factory it already runs nearby in Houston, and the company is also building a third facility in the area.

The new plant will make SEG's latest SIERRA N series panels, which use large 210-mm and 210R silicon wafers along with specialized manufacturing steps meant to improve panel durability and performance. SEG is also considering building a facility to make silicon solar cells domestically, which would let the company handle more of the panel-making process in the U.S. rather than relying on imported components.
