My Tesla Cybercab launch predictions

August 28, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 8

This one is about Tesla's robotaxi program, not home energy upgrades, but here's the gist. Tesla holds a launch event for its Cybercab on September 3 in Austin. The car itself isn't new — Tesla first showed this two-seater, steering-wheel-free vehicle back in October 2024. The expected news is that Tesla will start running Cybercabs as part of its existing robotaxi service in Texas and Florida, remove the steering wheel and safety monitor that current robotaxis still use, and announce a large fleet number, possibly over a thousand vehicles.

The catch, according to the piece, is the gap between announced fleet size and vehicles actually operating. Trackers have found no more than about 50 Tesla robotaxis active in a week, often closer to 20 on a given day, with the fully driverless portion even smaller. So a big announced number doesn't necessarily mean many cars will be on the road carrying riders anytime soon.

For homeowners, none of this affects rebates, energy upgrades, or your house directly. It's a consumer-tech and stock-market story about whether Tesla's robotaxi service is actually expanding or just making announcements. The one loosely related point: electricity rates have been rising, and if you're charging an EV at home, generating your own power with rooftop solar remains one way to control what you pay, regardless of how the robotaxi rollout goes.
