ICYMI: Enbridge’s Line 5 Has Another Frac Out As Reroute Challenge And Intimidation Concerns Escalate
Enbridge's Line 5 oil pipeline reroute project in Wisconsin has had another spill of drilling fluid, this time at Trout Brook in Marengo. It follows a 1,900-gallon spill earlier this summer. These "frac-outs" happen during underground drilling and can leak fluid into nearby water. The construction area runs near the Bad River Reservation, Copper Falls State Park, and hundreds of streams and wetlands, which environmental groups say remain at risk as work continues.
The spill happened the same week a court heard arguments over whether Enbridge's permits for the reroute should be overturned. The Bad River Band and environmental groups, including the Sierra Club, argued the state's Department of Natural Resources violated wetland and water protection laws in approving the project. Enbridge countered that the review process was thorough. Both sides will file written arguments by September 11, and the judge has 90 days after that to rule.
This is a pipeline construction dispute, not a home energy program, so it does not involve any rebate, deadline, or upgrade decision for your own house. It is relevant mainly if you live near the project area in northern Wisconsin, where spills could affect local water sources, or if you are following how fossil-fuel infrastructure projects are being contested as more of the country shifts toward electric heating and other cleaner alternatives.
