This is a builder's story about Clay and Danielle, a couple building a two-story, 1,536-square-foot home on their own in rural Wauzeka, Wisconsin, aiming for net-zero energy use. The house sits in climate zone 5A, a designation that describes the region's cold winters and moderate humidity, which shapes what insulation and building choices make sense there.

For the foundation, the couple used a system called Form-A-Drain: plastic channels that form the concrete footing and stay in place afterward, doubling as drainage and radon collection so there's no need to remove wooden forms later. Rather than following the standard deep, stepped footing common in that climate, they used a frost-protected shallow foundation approach, insulating around the footing with rigid foam board. This let them build a shorter foundation wall, just 18 inches, at the walkout portion of the basement, saving material and labor while still meeting code for frost protection.

Beyond the foundation, the couple's broader project involves ICF (insulated concrete form) walls, careful air sealing to limit drafts, dense-packed cellulose insulation, and continuous exterior insulation, all aimed at building a highly efficient, low-energy home largely by themselves.
