347-MW solar project breaks ground near Houston

September 2, 2026 · Solar Power World · Score: 9

Construction has begun on a large solar power project in Wharton County, Texas, southwest of Houston. The SunRoper project will generate 347 megawatts of DC power once finished and is set to start operating in December 2027. The electricity it produces will feed into ERCOT, the grid that serves most of Texas.

The project is being developed by OCI Energy and Arava Power, with construction handled by WHC. A Fortune 500 company has reportedly signed an agreement to buy a portion of the power the project will generate.

For homeowners, this is not a project you can sign up for or buy power from directly. It adds new generating capacity to the Texas grid, which could help with overall electricity supply in the Houston area as demand grows. It does not involve any rebates, incentives, or direct programs for individual homes, and there is nothing here that changes what upgrades or savings might be available to you. It is simply a large-scale addition to the state's power supply, built through private agreements between developers, a contractor, and a corporate buyer of the electricity.
