Zayed Sustainability Prize Closes 2027 Submissions with Strong Global Participation
The UAE's Zayed Sustainability Prize has closed submissions for its 2027 cycle, drawing more than 10,200 entries from 177 countries, its highest turnout in 18 years. That's a 32% jump from last year. The prize covers six categories: health, food, energy, water, climate action, and global high schools, and rewards organizations and student groups working on practical projects that improve access to essentials like power, water, and health care, mostly in underserved communities.
In the energy category, which drew nearly 1,000 entries, applicants focused on energy efficiency, storage, decentralized renewable power, smart grids, and demand-side management, meaning systems that help match energy use to supply and cut waste. This is more about global development projects than products you'd buy for your own house, but it points to where efficiency and storage innovation is heading worldwide.
Winners will be picked by a jury in September 2026 and announced at a ceremony on January 12, 2027. Each category winner gets $1 million, and finalists get $150,000. Six high schools will also win $150,000 each, with high school finalists getting $25,000. Since the prize began, its 139 past winners have reportedly reached more than 411 million people worldwide. For homeowners, this isn't a program you can apply to or benefit from directly, it's an international award tracking broader trends in clean energy and resource innovation, some of which may eventually shape technologies available closer to home.
