XPeng robotics raises $900M at $6.3B valuation for IRON robot push
This is a robotics and EV industry story, not an energy-efficiency one, so there's little here that changes plans for a home upgrade or rebate.
Chinese EV maker XPeng has raised more than $900 million for its robotics division at a valuation topping $6.3 billion. The money is meant to push its humanoid robot, called IRON, into mass production by the end of 2026. Backers include IDG Capital, Gaorong Ventures, and strategic investors Tencent and Alibaba. XPeng is also spinning the robotics unit into its own subsidiary over the next 18 months, while keeping majority ownership.
IRON is a humanoid robot with a flexible, skin-like covering and dozens of points of movement in its body and hands. It runs on XPeng's own AI chips, which the company says let the robot handle complex tasks on its own rather than being remotely controlled by a person, as some rival robot demos are. XPeng plans to start with the robots in its own stores and offices before selling them in China and other countries in 2027, with a longer-term goal of building a million units a year by 2030.
None of this involves home energy programs, rebates, or equipment for houses. It is a look at how far one automaker is pushing humanoid robots using the same factories it uses to build electric cars.
