xAI has quietly built a massive battery at its Memphis data center hub

September 11, 2026 · Canary Media · Score: 38

Elon Musk's SpaceXAI has built what may be the largest grid-connected battery in the country at its Colossus 2 data center in Memphis. Satellite images from July show 720 Tesla Megapack battery units on site, and company and utility executives have described the system as holding either 3.3 gigawatt-hours of storage or 2,000 megawatts of instant discharge capacity. Either figure would top the current record holder, a California solar-and-battery plant. The batteries let the data center pull back from the grid for several hours during periods of peak demand, so the massive computing operation doesn't strain the region's electricity supply.

This isn't really a story about home energy upgrades, but it does show where battery technology is heading: big grid batteries are increasingly being used to help power-hungry facilities like AI data centers manage electricity demand without building new power plants. The same basic idea — storing power to use when demand or costs are highest — is what home battery systems do on a much smaller scale.

The Memphis project has drawn criticism separate from the battery itself. SpaceXAI has also run dozens of mobile gas generators at the site without air permits, and a lawsuit from the Southern Environmental Law Center over pollution in nearby neighborhoods, including Whitehaven and Boxtown, is still pending. It remains unclear whether the new battery will reduce the company's reliance on those generators.
