Will we soon see sodium-ion batteries on electric bikes?

Sodium-ion batteries have been getting attention as a possible replacement for lithium-ion in all kinds of devices, including electric bikes. The appeal is real: sodium is cheap and abundant, these batteries handle cold weather better, tend to be safer, and can last many charge cycles. But for e-bikes specifically, they have a big drawback. Sodium-ion cells currently store less energy for their size and weight (roughly 140-180 Wh/kg, with newer designs aiming for closer to 200 Wh/kg) compared to the lithium-ion cells used in e-bike batteries today (200-280 Wh/kg). That means a sodium-ion battery would need to be bulkier to deliver the same range, which works against the compact, lightweight packs riders have gotten used to over the past decade.

Because of that size and weight penalty, sodium-ion looks like a better near-term fit for heavier vehicles, like electric motorcycles and scooters, where a few extra pounds of battery matter far less. Cost-focused buyers, such as delivery fleets, could be among the first to adopt it. Most of the development work is happening in China, where large battery manufacturers are working to push the chemistry's energy density higher.

For now, if you're shopping for an e-bike, none of this changes anything: lithium-ion remains the standard, and sodium-ion is not expected to show up in lightweight commuter e-bikes anytime soon, if ever.
