Why Egyptian farmers are growing crops under solar panels
Farmers in Egypt are testing "agrivoltaics," a setup that puts solar panels over farmland so the panels generate electricity while their shade protects crops below. Two pilot projects, backed by a mix of funders including the renewable energy company 3E, are trying this out in small farming communities and at larger scale. Instead of blocking growth, the shade is helping in places where sun and heat are becoming too intense: it cuts water loss from soil and eases heat stress on plants, many of which evolved to grow in dappled light rather than full sun. One project arranges panels in a checkerboard pattern, which produces less power than a standard solar farm but lets more light reach the crops underneath.
Similar research elsewhere backs this up. In Colorado, growing crops on rooftops under panels used a third as much water as unshaded plants, and cucumbers there grew unusually large. In Nevada, shade from solar panels has helped a rare desert plant thrive. Researchers are also testing transparent panels that let light through while still making electricity. In Egypt, an early standout has been watermelon, which one farm founder said is doing well for the first time since panels went up in May.
None of this is a home-upgrade program, but it points to solar panels doing double duty with agriculture, not just competing with it for land. The Egyptian projects are also using the electricity to run irrigation, with an eye toward eventually powering water-purification systems in dry, salty regions.
