When solar has nowhere to go: turning curtailed PV into dispatchable power

A new idea aims to put wasted solar power to use, though it's grid-scale technology, not something for a home rooftop system.

On sunny days, solar farms sometimes produce more electricity than the grid can use, so utilities cut back output rather than waste it. A company called Geo2Watts has proposed a way to capture that surplus instead. Its "Borehole Battery" system would use extra solar electricity to run a heat pump that heats water, which is then piped into old, unused oil and gas wells. The wells act as storage tanks, holding heat at temperatures up to about 200°C (392°F). Later, when power is needed, that stored heat runs a generator to produce electricity again.

This is different from geothermal energy, which taps naturally occurring heat underground. Here, the heat comes entirely from electricity that would otherwise go to waste. The pitch is that this could be cheaper than building new battery storage, since it reuses existing wells and takes advantage of solar power that has little value when it's curtailed.

For homeowners, this doesn't change anything about home solar panels, batteries, or rebates directly. It's a utility-scale concept aimed at making large solar farms more efficient and useful during evening hours when demand is high. But it points to a broader industry trend: as battery storage costs rise, companies are looking for creative, lower-cost ways to store extra solar power and deliver it when the grid actually needs it.
