Waymo Jacks Up Lobbying In Washington, DC

August 7, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 0

This is robotaxi industry news, not an energy-efficiency story, so it has no direct bearing on home upgrades or rebates. Still, here's what happened: Waymo, the self-driving car company, is expanding its lobbying push in Washington, DC, as competition heats up from other robotaxi companies like Zoox and Tesla. Waymo leased a third DC location, its largest yet, meant to support electric vehicle charging and maintenance for its fleet. The company says it will bring "tens of millions of dollars" in investment and "hundreds of jobs," including maintenance technicians, vehicle cleaners, and specialists who test its autonomous vehicles.

The push comes as DC's city council considers a bill that would allow only 200 robotaxis in the city. Waymo argues that's too few, noting the city already has more than 3,000 ride-hailing vehicles on the road. The company is trying to convince council members worried about driver job losses that its expansion creates other kinds of jobs instead.

Nothing here is settled yet. The council isn't expected to take a final vote until this fall or winter, and even if the bill passes, Waymo's service in DC wouldn't start until 2028. For homeowners, this is simply a look at how the robotaxi business is jockeying for position in a new market — it has no connection to home energy upgrades or rebate programs.
