Waymo Expands Into Germany & Tesla Pumping Up Production While Volkswagen In Crisis

July 11, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 0

This is auto industry news rather than home energy news, so there is not much here that touches your own house directly. Volkswagen is cutting four factories, half its current models, and about 100,000 jobs as it struggles with its shift to electric vehicles. Meanwhile Waymo, the US robotaxi company, has set up a new entity in Munich, Germany, and started mapping and test drives there, signaling it plans to launch driverless ride service in the country. Volkswagen has its own self-driving venture, called MOIA, which has quietly moved forward with a roboshuttle now in early production, self-driving VW ID. Buzz vans running with Uber in Los Angeles, and a new US partnership with a company called Beep to expand into Orlando.

At the same time, Tesla is increasing production at its German factory by 20%, aiming for 7,500 vehicles a week starting in October, citing strong demand. That expansion is striking given Volkswagen's cuts, even though Volkswagen Group still sells far more electric vehicles than Tesla across Europe overall.

None of this changes anything about home electrification, rebates, or upgrades. It is a snapshot of turmoil in the car industry as automakers work out how fast to move away from gas engines and how much to invest in self-driving technology. If you are watching the EV market because you are weighing an electric vehicle alongside home charging or solar plans, it is worth knowing that model lineups and pricing across brands could keep shifting as this shakes out.
