Volvo’s new midsize electric SUV is here, but it may be hard to get your hands on one

October 14, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 18

Volvo's new electric SUV, the EX60, is running into production trouble that will limit how many reach US buyers this year. The car is built on a new platform and uses manufacturing methods like megacasting and cell-to-body construction, where the battery pack is built into the vehicle's structure rather than added separately. Volvo says integrating the battery and building the electric motors has slowed the ramp-up at its Swedish factory, cutting output to roughly a tenth of the original target. The company says the delays are not related to safety or quality.

Volvo had hoped to sell around 7,000 EX60s in the US by the end of 2026, but a dealer says actual deliveries will fall well short of that. Volvo expects a larger supply to reach US dealers in early 2027, but for now it's prioritizing deliveries to Europe, where electric vehicle demand is stronger.

If you've been considering the EX60, this means it may be hard to find one at a dealer anytime soon, with wider availability more likely next year. The SUV starts at $58,400 and offers an EPA-estimated range up to 307 miles, with a higher-range version reaching 330 miles and faster charging. A longer-range version rated at 400 miles is expected to go on sale later this year. For homeowners who were eyeing this SUV alongside home charging or solar plans, the practical takeaway is simply a longer wait, not a change in the vehicle's price or specs.
