Volkswagen’s new electric era begins with reveal of ID. ERA 5X SUV
Volkswagen has revealed its new ID. ERA 5X, an electric SUV built for the Chinese market on a new platform called CMP (Compact Main Platform). The design was developed with Chinese automaker XPeng and uses a Chinese electronics system, along with a 155 kW electric motor and a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery from CATL, a battery type known for being durable and cost-effective rather than for long range. Volkswagen has not released battery size, driving range, or pricing yet.
The SUV is roughly the size of a Jeep Compass or Mazda CX-5, with buyers able to choose between 17, 18, or 19-inch wheels, different trim and lighting options, and a panoramic sunroof. Inside, it will include a LiDAR-based driver-assist system Volkswagen calls "Xingyun," which enables advanced automated driving on city streets, plus a "smart cockpit" interface for controlling the car's features.
For now, this SUV is aimed at the Chinese market, with no word on a U.S. release, pricing, or availability elsewhere. It marks Volkswagen's move toward a new generation of EVs built partly on Chinese technology, but there is nothing here yet for homeowners weighing electric vehicles or home charging setups in the U.S. to act on.
