Volkswagen’s best-seller is going electric in 2027 to replace the ID.4 and ID.5 [Images]
This is car news, not a home energy story, but here's what's happening: Volkswagen is replacing its electric ID.4 and ID.5 SUVs with a new model called the ID. Tiguan, arriving in 2027. The ID.4 and ID.5 have sold more than 950,000 units combined since 2021, making them among VW's most popular electric vehicles, so this is a significant update rather than a niche change.
The new ID. Tiguan will launch first in Europe in early 2027, with the US and other markets following shortly after. Volkswagen describes it as offering "premium design, generous space, intuitive operation, and innovative technologies," and early images show a boxier, more traditional SUV shape than the current ID.4, along with pop-out door handles instead of the flush ones on today's model. The interior hasn't been shown yet, but VW is expected to carry over the redesigned dashboard and the return of physical buttons seen in its other new electric concepts.
Specifics on range, charging speed, and price haven't been released. For comparison, the current ID.4 offers an EPA-estimated range up to 291 miles in rear-wheel-drive form and around 263 miles with all-wheel drive. Volkswagen says the ID. Tiguan will make its formal debut in early October, with more details expected then. For homeowners who charge an EV at home, this mainly matters as a heads-up that a popular electric SUV is getting a redesign, not as something requiring any change to home charging setups yet.
