Volkswagen Superviosory Board Approves Plan To Slash Models & Reduce Workforce By 100,000
Volkswagen's supervisory board has approved a major restructuring plan, cutting up to 100,000 jobs worldwide by 2030 and eliminating half of the models it currently sells. The company says European production capacity now exceeds demand by more than 500,000 vehicles a year, and it has not decided the fate of four German factories (in Hanover, Zwickau, Emden, and the Audi plant in Neckarsulm) that together employ more than 40,000 people. A plan for those plants is due by June 2027.
This is industry news rather than something that changes your rebates or upgrade options at home, but it is a sign of how fast car makers are shifting toward electric vehicles. Volkswagen's EV sales in Europe are rising even as its sales of conventional gas cars fall, and the company is betting its future on fewer, more competitive models rather than a broad lineup of gas and electric cars side by side. Other legacy automakers, including Ford, GM, and Stellantis, face similar pressure as EVs approach a quarter of new car sales and buyers increasingly look for cheaper, simpler vehicles.
None of this affects home energy rebates or upgrade programs directly. But if you're weighing an EV purchase alongside home electrification work like a heat pump or panel upgrade, it's worth knowing that automakers are in the middle of a turbulent shift, and model availability, pricing, and even which companies survive could look different in a few years.
