Volkswagen launches the cheaper ID. Polo EV after securing 25,000 orders in weeks

July 28, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 1

Volkswagen has launched a cheaper version of its ID. Polo electric car in Europe, following strong demand for the model since it went on sale earlier this year. The new entry-level version, called the Trend, uses a smaller 37 kWh battery and starts at about 24,995 euros (roughly $29,000), with a range of 207 miles. It can charge from 10% to 80% in about 23 minutes using fast charging. This follows the larger-battery version, which starts around $40,000 and offers up to 282 miles of range.

The cheaper model still comes with standard safety features like lane-keeping assistance, and higher trims add extras such as adaptive cruise control, a rear camera, matrix LED headlights, and a wireless phone charger. Notably, the car can also power outside devices, like e-bikes, through a built-in outlet — a feature called vehicle-to-load.

None of this is available in the United States, so it doesn't directly affect American buyers looking for a new EV. But it's a sign of where prices and technology in smaller electric cars are heading elsewhere, as automakers respond to competition from lower-cost Chinese EV brands. In the UK, Volkswagen is also rolling out versions of the car this summer and fall, with some trims qualifying for a government discount of £1,500 (about $2,000) off the purchase price.
