USGBC and NOMA collaborate to expand access and opportunity in the green building movement

October 12, 2026 · US Green Building Council (USGBC) · Score: 28

The U.S. Green Building Council, which developed the LEED green building rating system, is teaming up with the National Organization of Minority Architects to widen access to training, credentials and professional networks in the green building field. The goal is to help architects and designers from underrepresented communities connect more easily with sustainability education and career opportunities, not to change any product standards or rebates homeowners might use.

This is mainly an industry and workforce story rather than something that changes what's available to homeowners right now. The two groups plan to run joint education programs, local events and conference sessions through 2026 and into 2027, building on an earlier initiative called SHADES. One early event already took place in Georgia with a local NOMA chapter, and another is planned for early 2027 in Philadelphia with PhilaNOMA and Green Building United. Both organizations are also holding their annual conferences this month — NOMA's in the Miami area Oct. 14-18, and USGBC's Greenbuild conference in New York City Oct. 20-23.

For a homeowner, none of this directly affects rebates, incentives or technical standards for things like insulation or heat pumps. It signals that more architects and designers may be trained with equity and community impact in mind as green building practices spread, which could shape how future projects are designed, but it does not introduce any new program, deadline or dollar figure that applies to your own house.
