US Startup Pitches Green Hydrogen And Solar Power For Off-Grid Reliability
A California startup called HyWatts is developing a system that pairs solar power with green hydrogen — hydrogen made by splitting water using renewable electricity, rather than the natural gas or coal typically used to produce it. The company's "Power-Plant-in-a-Box" is a portable unit that generates electricity directly from solar panels during the day and converts extra solar power into hydrogen for storage. That stored hydrogen works like a long-lasting battery, one HyWatts says can outperform standard lithium-ion storage over time. The main target use so far is off-grid EV charging stations and data centers, places without a steady grid connection.
The technology relies on a "Reversible Fuel Cell" that can both make hydrogen and turn it back into electricity using one integrated unit, running hotter than typical systems. This design cuts out costly parts like water treatment and cooling systems, which HyWatts says brings down the price of green hydrogen equipment that has long been too expensive for wide use.
This is early-stage startup activity, not a product available to homeowners. Federal support for large clean hydrogen projects was scaled back last year, so much of this innovation is happening at the startup level or heading overseas, as with a related company, Talus Ag, which makes hydrogen-based fertilizer and has struck deals in Europe, Africa, and Asia. For now, there is no rebate, program, or purchase option tied to this news that would apply to your own house.
