UK EV registrations hit 30% share in June as Tesla rebounds 42%

July 3, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 5

Electric cars made up nearly 30% of new car sales in the UK in June, one of the strongest months on record outside the usual spring and fall sales peaks. Battery-electric registrations jumped 38% to 64,440 units, even as the overall new car market grew 15%. Part of the push came from higher fuel prices, which are making electric cars look more attractive next to gas models. The UK's government mandate requiring a rising share of zero-emission car sales each year is also a factor, and the country is now growing EV sales faster than the broader European market.

Tesla had a strong month too, with UK sales up 42% year over year to 12,403 vehicles. That looks like a real comeback after a rough year in Europe, helped by refreshed versions of the Model Y and Model 3 and lower prices. But the comparison is against a very weak year-ago period, so it's more a recovery than a leap to new highs. BYD, the Chinese automaker, kept growing too, up 9% to 2,999 units, though still well behind Tesla's UK volume.

None of this changes rebate programs or costs for US homeowners directly, since it's about UK car sales. But it points to a broader trend: as fuel costs rise, more drivers are switching to electric, which for homeowners already means more interest in charging at home and pairing an EV with solar or other home energy upgrades to lower running costs.
