U.S. mining giant begins vanadium flow battery study in Australia
Australian Vanadium Limited and its subsidiary VSUN Energy have agreed to study using vanadium flow batteries at Alcoa's alumina refineries in Western Australia. Vanadium flow batteries are a type of large-scale battery that stores energy in liquid electrolyte tanks, rather than the solid cells used in typical lithium-ion batteries. They're built for long-duration storage, meaning they can discharge power steadily over many hours rather than in short bursts.
The proposed system would have a capacity of 50 to 80 megawatts and could store power for six to eight hours, with room to extend beyond that. Alcoa would use it to manage energy costs, smooth out demand at its refineries, and make better use of renewable power in its operations. This is a scoping study, meaning the companies are checking whether the idea is technically and financially workable before committing to anything further. If it goes well, the next step would be more detailed feasibility work and possibly a deal for AVL to supply power to Alcoa's sites.
