U.S. battery storage capacity grows 70% annually over the past three years
Battery storage on the U.S. power grid is expanding fast, growing about 70% a year over the last three years. By the end of 2025, the country had 43.6 gigawatts (GW) of battery storage in operation, and another 8.3 GW came online in the first half of 2026, bringing the total to nearly 52 GW. Developers plan to add 54 GW more through 2028, which would push national capacity past 105 GW.
This growth is tied closely to solar power. Batteries are increasingly paired with solar farms so operators can store cheap solar electricity generated during sunny hours and release it later when demand and prices rise. Big examples include the Bellefield Solar and Energy Storage Farm in California, which paired 500 megawatts of solar with 500 megawatts of storage and plans to double both by late 2026; the Manatee Solar Energy Center in Florida; and the Gemini Solar Hybrid plant in Nevada. Texas is seeing some of the fastest growth, with battery capacity expected to more than double, from 15 GW to 37 GW, by the end of 2027.
For homeowners, this doesn't change anything directly about home energy upgrades or rebates, but it reflects a broader shift in how the grid works. As solar and battery storage expand, the electricity mix is becoming more reliant on renewable sources, expected to reach 21% of total U.S. generation by 2027. That shift can affect electricity reliability and pricing patterns over time, particularly in states seeing heavy solar and storage buildout, like Texas, California, Florida, and Nevada.
