U.S. Battery Storage Capacity Averaged 70% Growth Over The Last Three Years

Battery storage on the U.S. power grid has grown fast, averaging 70% a year over the last three years. By the end of 2025, utilities had 43.6 gigawatts of battery storage running nationwide, and by mid-2026 that had climbed to nearly 52 gigawatts. Operators plan to add another 54 gigawatts over the next two and a half years, with 14 gigawatts expected by the end of this year, 26 more in 2027, and 14 more in 2028.

Most of this storage is paired with large solar farms. The biggest example is the Bellefield Solar and Energy Storage Farm, which came online in December 2025 in California with 500 megawatts of solar and 500 megawatts of battery storage. Plans call for doubling its size by November 2026, which would make it the largest storage facility in the country. Other big projects include Manatee Solar Energy Center in Florida and Gemini Solar Hybrid in Nevada. These solar-plus-battery setups let power companies store electricity when it's cheap and sell it when demand, and prices, spike.

None of this changes what any single homeowner needs to do right now. But it's a sign of where the grid is headed: more solar and storage capacity feeding into the system generally means more renewable power available, and potentially more stable prices, as utilities lean on batteries instead of firing up extra power plants during peak demand hours.
