Turning millions of Teslas and Mach-Es into V2L power stations: WETOX D2 earns world’s first Next-Gen V2X certification from SGS

August 15, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 35

A company called WETOX has built an adapter that lets electric vehicles power tools, appliances, and other gear through the car's charge port, a feature called vehicle-to-load, or V2L. Many EVs, including Tesla's Model S, 3, X, and Y and the Ford Mustang Mach-E, never came with this built in. The new adapter, called the D2, plugs into the existing charge port to add that capability without needing a different car.

The company says the D2 avoids a common problem with other adapters: triggering the car's battery heating system, which can waste battery power even when no appliances are running. WETOX also points to an IPX5 waterproof rating for the main unit and IPX6 for the included power strip, meaning both are built to handle rain. The product recently earned what's described as the world's first certification from testing firm SGS for a next-generation EV communication standard called ISO 15118-20, though the adapter itself currently works with an earlier version of that standard.

The D2 is being sold through a Kickstarter campaign running through August 30, with versions for different charging plug types (NACS, CCS1, CCS2) to fit North American and European vehicles. For homeowners who already own an eligible EV, this is a way to get outage or off-grid power from the car's battery without buying a new vehicle with factory-installed V2L. As with any crowdfunded product, availability and long-term support depend on the campaign and company follow-through.
