Trump’s Secret Offshore Wind Payout Benefits Billionaire Donor

August 27, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 23

The Trump administration has struck a deal with German energy company RWE that pays the company $1.2 billion in taxpayer money to cancel its planned offshore wind projects and shift focus to fossil fuels instead. New reporting from the Washington Post shows RWE is turning around and spending $900 million of that payout to buy a stake in a large liquefied natural gas project in Louisiana. The seller is an Australian billionaire who donated a million dollars to Trump's campaign.

This is the fifth such deal the administration has made to pay energy companies to drop offshore wind projects. Several states have filed lawsuits challenging whether these arrangements are legal, and the Sierra Club has backed those suits, calling the payouts corrupt and warning they will raise electricity costs rather than lower them.

For homeowners, this doesn't change any rebate program or upgrade deadline directly. But it's a sign of where federal energy policy is headed: away from supporting offshore wind and toward fossil fuel infrastructure. Offshore wind has been one source feeding the regional electric grids that power homes, and industry advocates argue that canceling these projects will push electricity prices up over time. If you're weighing a heat pump, electrification, or other upgrades that depend on grid electricity costs, it's worth keeping an eye on how these federal shifts affect utility rates in your state, since policy at this level can eventually show up in your monthly bill even though no immediate action is required on your part.
