Trump-Connected Greenland Energy Company Falls On Its Face

August 12, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 1

This is a story about oil drilling plans in Greenland, not home energy upgrades, but here's what happened. A company called Greenland Energy, tied to a Denver-based SPAC and reportedly connected to President Trump, had been moving equipment into Greenland's Jameson Land Basin to start oil exploration without the required permit. The company had already shipped in bulldozers, trucks, and housing units, and lined up Halliburton for logistics support.

Greenland's government stepped in. Its Department of Business and Raw Materials issued a cease and desist in late July, warning that any future logistics work needs approval before it happens. In response, Greenland Energy announced on August 11 that its permitting partner, a UK firm called 80 Mile, had gotten word from Greenland's government that the project needs a more thorough review. The companies now expect permitting to stretch into winter 2027, essentially pausing the whole plan. Stock in both companies dropped sharply on the news.

This doesn't affect home energy programs or rebates in the US. It's a case of a company trying to move fast on oil drilling in the Arctic and getting stopped by the local government's permitting rules. Greenland had already given up on new oil exploration back in 2021 after decades of difficult, expensive drilling attempts, so this setback fits a longer pattern of Arctic oil projects struggling to get off the ground.
