TR-BIPV development: Leading with thermal recovery in integrated building envelopes

A developer is posting in an online building science forum to describe an early-stage idea for a roofing and siding system that combines solar panels with heat capture. The concept, called TR-BIPV (thermal recovery building-integrated photovoltaics), would embed solar panels directly into roofing and siding rather than bolting panels on top. Behind the panels, the system would actively pull heat for space heating and hot water, while also handling drainage, airflow, and moisture control, and serving as the home's weatherproof exterior cladding with no visible fasteners.

This is a concept in development, not a product on the market. The post is a request for technical feedback from engineers and building scientists on things like the best airflow or fluid setup for capturing heat continuously, and how to handle the stress that builds up when the solar layer and the heat-recovery layer behind it expand and contract at different rates.

For homeowners, there is nothing to act on yet. No pricing, availability, installer network, or efficiency numbers have been shared, and the idea has not been tested or built at this stage. It is worth knowing about if you are interested in where roofing and solar technology may be headed, since a system that generates power, captures heat, and protects the building envelope all at once could eventually offer another option beyond standard rooftop solar. But until real products, test data, or installation details appear, this remains a proposal, not something to plan a home upgrade around.
