Toyota’s next-gen Corolla EV takes center stage as a ‘sense of crisis’ reshapes the company
This is car industry news and doesn't connect to home energy upgrades or rebates, so there isn't a homeowner angle to draw out here. Briefly, though: Toyota is developing a next-generation version of its Corolla, including an electric version, built on a new platform flexible enough to support gas, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric versions of the car. Company chairman Akio Toyoda described a "considerable sense of crisis" inside Toyota as it faces growing competition from Tesla and Chinese automakers like BYD.
The report, based on a Japanese television special that went behind the scenes at Toyota's development site, showed several body styles under work, including a sedan, hatchback, crossover, and sport model. Engineers interviewed acknowledged concerns that Toyota's development and manufacturing pace is falling behind Chinese rivals. The design closely follows a concept Toyota showed last October, with a low, sporty look.
None of this changes anything about home energy costs, electric vehicle charging incentives, or rebates available to homeowners right now. It is simply a look at how one of the world's largest carmakers is responding to competitive pressure in the shift toward electric vehicles, with no specific launch date given for the production version of the car.
