These Legacy Automakers Lead the EV Transition in the United States — BEV Share of Auto Brand & Group Sales
New sales figures show which car brands are selling the most electric vehicles in the US, and traditional automakers still have a long way to go. Among brands that sell both gas and electric models, Cadillac had the highest share of electric sales in the second quarter of this year, at 35.4 percent, up from 30.7 percent in the first quarter. Porsche came in next at 10.2 percent. BMW, Hyundai, and Subaru followed, each in the mid-single digits. Subaru's jump stood out most, rising from about 2 percent electric to 4.2 percent between the two quarters.
Looking at parent companies rather than individual brands, BMW Group had the highest share of electric sales both quarters, reaching 6 percent in the second quarter. General Motors moved up sharply, from 3.6 percent to 5 percent, passing Hyundai-Kia for second place. Most other major automakers, including Ford, Honda, Nissan, and Stellantis (the parent of Jeep, Ram, and Dodge), had electric shares below 2 percent.
For a homeowner weighing whether to add an electric vehicle alongside home upgrades like solar panels or a heat pump, this is a reminder that electric options are still a small slice of what most brands sell, and availability varies a lot by brand. If you're loyal to a particular automaker, these numbers give a rough sense of how committed that company currently is to building electric models, which can affect how many choices you have on the lot and how quickly the technology in those models is improving.
