These EV chargers hang from garage ceilings – and install in hours

August 26, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 31

A startup called Voltpost, known for turning street lampposts into EV chargers, has launched two new charger designs aimed at parking garages and apartment buildings. One mounts to the ceiling and lowers a retractable cable when needed; the other attaches to walls or pedestals. Both are meant for property owners who want to add charging without trenching through pavement or doing a major renovation, and Voltpost says installation can take just hours, cutting costs by as much as 70 percent compared with standard setups. That figure is the company's own estimate, and actual savings will vary by site.

These are Level 2 chargers, delivering up to 9.6 kW, which Voltpost says can add roughly 25 to 30 miles of range per hour depending on the vehicle. They come with either one or two ports and can use either connector type (J1772 or the newer NACS standard used by Tesla). Drivers pay through an app, credit card, or RFID card, and the chargers show up in mapping and rideshare apps.

This matters most for people who live in condos or apartments rather than houses with driveways. Nearly a third of U.S. homes are in multi-unit buildings, but only a small fraction of home EV charging happens there, partly because installation has been costly and disruptive. These ceiling- and wall-mounted designs don't remove every hurdle — buildings still need enough electrical capacity and an owner willing to pay for it — but they could make retrofits simpler. Voltpost hasn't announced pricing, availability dates, or which properties will get them first.
