There’s Plenty of R-410A to Be Found – For Now

August 12, 2026 · ACHR News · Score: 77

If your home has central air conditioning or a heat pump installed before 2025, it likely runs on R-410A, a common refrigerant that's now being phased out in favor of newer, lower-emission options like R-32 and R-454B. As of this year, almost all new equipment sold uses the newer refrigerants — R-410A systems now make up only about 1% of new ducted equipment sales and roughly 3% of ductless sales.

The good news for homeowners with existing R-410A systems: supply for repairs and servicing is currently healthy. Industry surveys found that nearly 80% of equipment distributors have R-410A stock at or above normal levels, and prices have so far stayed lower than expected. So if your air conditioner or heat pump needs a refrigerant recharge or repair right now, there's no indication you'll run into shortages.

Looking further out, the picture gets murkier. Government rules will cut allowed production of these older refrigerants sharply by 2029, dropping supply to 30% of a earlier baseline. After that, servicing existing systems will depend heavily on recycled and reclaimed refrigerant rather than newly produced material. Industry groups say that means less of today's refrigerant should go to waste, since it may be needed to keep older systems running in the future. For now, though, there's no cause for concern if your current system needs service.
