The grid’s fastest-growing resource isn’t generation. It’s flexibility.
Electricity demand is rising fast, mostly from data centers and growing electrification, and building new power plants and power lines to keep up takes years. This piece argues that a faster fix already sitting in homes and businesses is "flexibility" — the ability to shift when and how electricity gets used, stored, or sent back to the grid. That includes things like home batteries, smart thermostats and appliances, and electric vehicles that can eventually feed power back into a home or the grid (called vehicle-to-grid, though that technology is still early and not widely available yet).
The bigger story here is about how the grid is run, not new gadgets you'd buy. PJM, the regional grid operator covering much of the mid-Atlantic and parts of the Midwest, is under pressure from federal regulators to speed up how it approves new rules for flexible power use and connects big new users like data centers to the grid. A federal hearing on July 23 will look at whether PJM's decision-making process — which the author says has taken years to approve even simple changes — can move fast enough to make room for flexibility resources.
For homeowners, there's no direct action here. But if your utility is in PJM's territory, this debate could eventually shape whether programs that pay you for using less power at peak times, or for letting your EV or battery help the grid, expand and pay more, or stay stuck behind slow rule-making.
