A separate software tool, called GEOPHIRES, helps developers estimate a project's costs and likely profits before they start digging, using details like drilling depth, construction timeline, and local electricity prices.

It is research aimed at geothermal developers and drilling companies, not at homeowners installing geothermal heat pumps or ground-source systems on their own property. The technology is about making large-scale geothermal power plants cheaper and more efficient to build, which could, over time, add more geothermal electricity to the grid.
