The electric meter is growing a brain: Why AMI 2.0 is the grid’s next big leap and what you should do about it
Utilities are starting to swap out the "smart meters" installed on homes over the past 15-20 years for a more advanced version, sometimes called AMI 2.0 (advanced metering infrastructure). The first generation of these meters mainly sent usage data back to the utility for billing and outage tracking. The new ones act more like small computers attached to your meter, able to run software, get updates over time, and analyze data on the spot rather than just reporting it.
For homeowners, the practical upside utilities are pursuing includes things like faster detection of outages without waiting for someone to call in, better tracking of voltage problems, and the ability to spot dangerous electrical conditions such as arcing or a broken neutral wire before they cause a fire or damage equipment. The new meters can also break down your overall electricity use to identify specific appliances, like a heat pump or pool pump, which could eventually show up as more detailed information on your utility bill or app.
How soon this reaches your house depends on where you live. Adoption of the current generation of smart meters already varies widely: Texas and California are above 80% penetration, while parts of New England are around 30%. Utilities with older meter fleets are more likely to move first, since those devices are nearing the end of their useful life. There's no set timeline or program tied to this shift, but if your utility replaces your meter in the coming years, it may come with these added capabilities.
