The Chevy Equinox EV is due for an update: Here’s what could change

July 27, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 24

The Chevy Equinox EV, GM's best-selling electric vehicle, is due for a redesign built on a new platform GM is reportedly developing, codenamed BEV-N internally. Sources say the Equinox EV will be the first model to use it, with the updated version expected in late 2028 or early 2029. GM hasn't confirmed the timing or details officially, but a spokesperson said the company has future EVs in development across all its brands.

The current Equinox EV starts at $34,995 and offers up to 319 miles of range, making it one of the more affordable long-range electric SUVs. But sales have dropped 41% in the first half of 2026 compared to a year earlier, partly because the $7,500 federal tax credit expired last September, and partly because rivals like the Toyota bZ and Hyundai IONIQ 5 have received major updates that pushed the Equinox down to fifth in sales. The new platform is expected to bring better efficiency, faster charging, and more range, though exact numbers haven't been announced.

If you're shopping now, this doesn't change anything about the Equinox EV you'd buy today — that update is still a few years off. In the meantime, GM is adding an NACS charging port (the Tesla-style plug now becoming standard) to all its 2027 electric vehicles, including the Equinox, which affects which chargers it can plug into without an adapter.
