The Aral Sea isn’t just an ecological nightmare – it’s a carbon bomb
The Aral Sea, once one of the largest inland bodies of water on Earth, has mostly dried up over the past 60 years as its feeder rivers were diverted for cotton irrigation. New research finds this loss did more than create an ecological disaster: it released a huge amount of carbon dioxide. Healthy lakes trap organic matter in their sediment, acting as carbon sinks. When they dry out, that stored carbon escapes into the air. Scientists estimate the Aral Sea has released 748 million metric tons of carbon dioxide since 1960, roughly three times Spain's annual emissions, with wind blowing exposed sediment away accounting for close to a fifth of that.
The lake bed still holds an estimated 605 million metric tons of carbon dioxide that hasn't escaped yet. Researchers argue that protecting this remaining carbon could be treated like a climate solution, potentially worth around $18 billion in carbon credits, which might create financial incentive to restore water flow to the sea. Similar drying is happening at other lakes worldwide, including Lake Chad, Bolivia's Lake Poopó, the Caspian Sea, California's Salton Sea, and Utah's Great Salt Lake, which separate research found is releasing over 4 million tons of carbon dioxide yearly.
This isn't a story with a direct step for homeowners to take. It's a reminder that shrinking lakes and reservoirs are an overlooked source of greenhouse gas emissions, and that protecting water bodies, not just wildlife and communities, may increasingly be framed as a climate issue too.
