The 2026 North American Copper in Architecture Awards: Honoring Sheet Metal Craftsmanship at Its Peak

August 13, 2026 · ACHR News · Score: 15

The Copper Development Association has named eight winners of its 2026 North American Copper in Architecture Awards, honoring sheet metal contractors for their work on copper roofs, façades, and architectural details across the U.S. and Canada. This is an industry recognition, not a program homeowners can apply to, but the winning projects give a sense of what copper can do on a building.

The award-winning work ranges from new construction to historic restoration. In Birmingham, Michigan, a guest house and conservatory got nearly 7,500 square feet of copper cladding. Quincy, Massachusetts's new public safety headquarters got an 11,196-square-foot copper roof. The University of Minnesota's Fraser Hall received more than 15,600 square feet of custom-stamped copper panels. Several older buildings were also restored, including a 1911 Quebec City landmark, a 1920s Chicago fieldhouse, Philadelphia's historic Contributionship building, a cupola at Smith College rebuilt using traditional copper roofing techniques, and a federal heritage building in Ottawa.

For a homeowner, the takeaway is less about any specific program and more about the material itself: copper is prized in these projects for its durability, its ability to be shaped into custom details, and how it ages over decades on both new buildings and century-old ones. If you're weighing roofing or exterior materials for their long-term lifespan and appearance, these projects show what copper can look like when installed well, though the awards themselves don't come with any rebate or funding relevant to your own home.
