Tesla’s full EV lineup can now also provide home backup energy

October 6, 2026 · Solar Power World · Score: 35

Tesla is expanding its Powershare Home Backup program beyond the Cybertruck to its full EV lineup. New Model 3 and Model Y vehicles can now feed power back into the home when paired with a Powerwall 3 battery, using what's called bidirectional charging — the car's battery can send electricity to your house, not just receive it.

The setup extends how long your home can run on backup power during an outage. Tesla says a Cybertruck can add about three extra days of backup, while a Model 3 or Model Y adds about two days, based on an average household using around 30 kWh a day. To get this, you need a Powerwall 3, a compatible charger (Wall Connector 3 or Universal Wall Connector), and a Model 3 or Model Y bought after October 1, 2026. Cybertruck owners already qualify regardless of purchase date.

If you're installing a new Powerwall 3 and Wall Connector together, Tesla says the backup feature can be turned on without extra hardware or wiring. If you already have the equipment installed, an installer needs to check that the charger is wired into your home's backup circuit and meets local electrical code — after that, the feature can usually be switched on remotely. For homeowners who already have solar, a Powerwall, and an eligible Tesla EV, this could mean longer blackout protection without buying new equipment.
