Tesla says ‘Robotaxi’ is expanding — its own chart shows it’s not

July 22, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 0

This story is about robotaxis, not home energy upgrades, but it touches on EVs, so here's the gist. Tesla told investors its Robotaxi service is expanding, using a chart showing cumulative paid miles climbing past 2.4 million. But when you look at growth quarter by quarter instead of as a running total, the numbers are flat: Tesla added about 900,000 paid miles in the first quarter of 2026 and the same in the second quarter. No acceleration, just a plateau.

Tesla's response to the slowdown has been adding new service areas, including Tampa and Orlando, without saying how many vehicles are in each. But the total active fleet is small, roughly 21 vehicles across Austin, Dallas, Tampa, and Orlando, down from a peak of around 25 in Austin alone back in April. Spreading the same small number of cars across more cities makes the map look bigger without actually increasing how many rides get done. Most of these rides also still have a Tesla employee in the car as a safety monitor, unlike competitor Waymo, which runs driverless rides at much higher volume.

For homeowners, this is mainly relevant if you're weighing an EV purchase or watching Tesla as a company. It doesn't change anything about home energy rebates, heat pumps, or weatherization programs. If you already drive an EV, pairing it with home solar remains a separate way to lower fueling costs, unrelated to how the robotaxi rollout is going.
