Tesla goes to trial over racism claims against Black workers at ‘plantation’

September 21, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 0

This is a legal story about Tesla, not an energy-upgrade item, but here's what's happening. Tesla is on trial starting today in Alameda County Superior Court over claims that its Fremont, California factory subjected thousands of Black workers to racial slurs, segregation, and lower pay. The case was brought by California's Civil Rights Department and covers more than 6,000 workers, with no cap on potential damages. It's a bench trial, meaning a judge, not a jury, will decide the outcome, and it's set to run through October 30.

The state's complaint alleges supervisors used racial slurs, workers called the factory a "plantation," and swastikas and racist graffiti appeared in common areas. California's analysis found Black workers earned about $1,533 a month less than white workers between June 2018 and June 2024, and says they were funneled into harder, lower-paid jobs and passed over for promotion. Tesla has faced similar claims from workers since 2017, including a high-profile case that ended with a $3.2 million award after appeals. A separate federal case from the EEOC is in mediation, and roughly 580 Black workers are pursuing individual claims in another lawsuit. Tesla says it does not tolerate discrimination and declined to comment on the trial.

This has no bearing on home energy upgrades or rebates. It's included here as a general news item about a company many homeowners know through its solar and battery products.
