Tesla Enables V2H Bidirectional Charging, Europe Completes EV4EU Trial

October 11, 2026 · CleanTechnica · Score: 44

Tesla has turned on vehicle-to-home (V2H) capability — the ability to send power from a car's battery back into a house — for every Model 3 and Model Y built in the US on or after October 1, 2026. Some cars made as early as April may also have the needed hardware. You can check by going to Settings > Software > Additional Vehicle Info on the car's touchscreen; if it says "Powershare Support: Enabled," the feature is there. It cannot be added through a software update to older cars, since it needs different internal electronics, and Tesla has not said whether a hardware upgrade will ever be offered.

To actually use it, Model 3 and Model Y owners need a Tesla Powerwall 3 home battery plus a Wall Connector, professionally installed. The system can supply up to 11.5 kW, enough to run a typical home for roughly two days on a full charge, based on average daily use of 30 kWh. Tesla says the home must be owner-occupied, with the car parked within 20 feet of the installation and an electrical panel rated under 225 amps. The Cybertruck can do this without a Powerwall, using a separate Powershare Gateway instead.

Separately, a four-year European Union research project called EV4EU wrapped up, testing how electric cars can also send power back to the grid, not just the home. In Portugal, the trial cut household charging costs by about 14 percent and raised renewable energy use by nearly 22 percent. Similar tests ran in Slovenia, Greece, and Denmark, looking at how EV batteries might eventually help balance local power grids.
