Tesla defeats Sweden’s IF Metall union after 1,021-day strike

August 13, 2026 · Electrek · Score: 4

Tesla's mechanics in Sweden have ended a strike that lasted 1,021 days, the longest labor dispute in modern Swedish history. The union, IF Metall, walked off the job in October 2023 after Tesla refused to sign a standard Swedish labor contract covering wages and conditions. The union says it's calling off the strike because Tesla paid out every one of the roughly 120 striking mechanics individually, leaving no one left on the picket line. Tesla never signed the agreement.

Other unions had piled on over the years: dockworkers refused to unload Teslas, mail carriers stopped delivering license plates, and electricians wouldn't service its chargers. Tesla worked around all of it by importing cars through other routes and going to court for plates directly. Despite the pressure, the Model Y remained Sweden's best-selling car through the worst of the blockade. Sales only collapsed later, dropping about 67% in 2025, but that drop tracked backlash against Elon Musk's political activity, not the strike itself.

This is a labor and business story out of Sweden with no direct effect on home energy upgrades or rebates in the US. It mainly signals that Tesla was willing and able to outlast a major union fight by paying its way out, which may shape how it handles labor disputes elsewhere.
